What Are the Many Benefits of Integrating CMMI for Small Business?

Dear Jeff, I created this company out of nothing three years ago, grew it to 15 people so far, and it’s my baby. I have put everything I have into it, hired the best agile developers, trained them myself, and have the best small team in the business. We want a Maturity Level 3 rating, for bidding purposes, but what are some of the other benefits of CMMI for a small business like us? ~ Tom B. Dear Tom, That’s terrific that you have built a company to be proud of. Clearly you’ve put a lot of time and effort into reaching that goal in such a short time. And it reflects well on you that you are interested in the benefits of CMMI for a small business like yours, beyond the possibility of bidding new business – it can certainly be more than that.

Is CMMI for the small business cost-prohibitive?

Hey, Jeff – My business partner is interested in a CMMI maturity level for small business, if such a thing exists. I told him CMMI for the small business is cost-prohibitive for a company under 25 FTEs like ours that is just trying to do the right things to improve performance. Am I right? ~ Joseph “Jody” D. Dear Jody – Nope, your partner is right. Based on what you’ve shared here, an evidence-based tool like the CMMI is the best framework for what you are trying to do, even as a small company. I’ll explain why below.

BROADSWORD EXPANDS MULTI-MODEL IMPROVEMENT SERVICE

Organizations in Auto Industry Use MMI to Align Frameworks and Methodologies

DETROIT, MI, May 18, 2015 – Today Broadsword Solutions Corporation (Broadsword), a performance innovation company, announced that it has expanded capacity to help organizations that have been hindered by a poor integration of popular frameworks and methodologies such as the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI), ISO/TS and Auto SPICE.  Now, organizations in the automotive industry can more easily align, streamline and combine these frameworks and methods innovatively for greater results, with Broadsword’s Multi-Model Improvement (MMI) solution.

CMMI is a world-class behavioral model for engineering performance improvement that was developed at Carnegie Mellon University.  In using agile methods to implement CMMI-based solutions, Broadsword pioneered the AgileCMMI approach for improving software development and organizational processes.  MMI is another way Broadsword helps auto industry organizations that have been appraised at CMMI Maturity Level 2 or 3 strengthen the way they do business.

"Multi-Model Improvement is about improving and changing the way your company behaves,” said Broadsword’s president, Jeff Dalton.  “Because our MMI consultants understand the complexity of culture change – and have the skills to help your organization set goals, communicate and solve problems – we help you transform in a positive way, so that you can improve performance, build stronger products and have happier employees and customers.”

Broadsword is celebrating its 10-Year Anniversary by expanding its ability to drive high-performance engineering to more companies.  The firm is using its AgileCMMI methodology in more collaborative consulting, coaching and training solutions, including the Agile Resiliency Architecture (ARA), Agile Transformation, and CMMIxs (“extra small”) for firms under 25 people, along with its newly expanded MMI offering.

“Taking a multi-model improvement approach can help alleviate a lot of problems in the auto industry caused by a poor integration of ISO/TS, CMMI and Auto SPICE,” said Ross Timmerman, Senior Consultant with Broadsword.  “MMI helps you improve requirements churn and volatility, meet schedule and budget, and better perform the work you do every day.”
For more information about MMI, the latest free Webinar in Broadsword’s “Everything You Need to Know” Series, “Multi-Model Improvement!” premiers on Wednesday, May 19, 2015 at noon EDT.  Anyone interested may register for the webinar here.

BROADSWORD ANNOUNCES THE RELEASE OF CMMIxs

Innovative Product Helps “Extra-Small” Firms Achieve CMMI Ratings Affordably

WATERFORD, MI, April 23, 2015 – Today Broadsword Solutions Corporation (Broadsword), a performance innovation company, announced that it has released CMMIxs (www.cmmixs.com), a subscription-based product designed to help emerging or “extra-small” IT and engineering firms compete for lucrative, multi-year contracts from large buyers like the federal government that require or recommend a Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) rating.

CMMI is a world-class behavioral model for engineering performance improvement that was developed at Carnegie Mellon University.  Large buyers use CMMI Ratings as a tool to differentiate among the most qualified suppliers.  Until now, some companies with under 25 employees have been blocked from bidding due to the high cost, complexity and time commitment of adopting the CMMI with traditional methods.

"For many extra-small companies, the road to achieving a CMMI Level 2 or CMMI Level 3 seems too complex, expensive and time-consuming,” said Broadsword’s president, Jeff Dalton.  “Others small firms are looking for ways to better position themselves for acquisition or merger.  CMMIxs helps them overcome the barriers.”

Broadsword is celebrating its 10-Year Anniversary by expanding its ability to drive high-performance engineering to more companies, using its AgileCMMI methodology in collaborative consulting, coaching and training solutions, including the Agile Resiliency Architecture (ARA), Multi-Model Improvement (MMI), and its newly expanded Agile Transformation offering.  With the release of CMMIxs, Broadsword is able to impact a previously under-served segment of the industry.

“Built around virtual tools and flexible timing, CMMIxs is made available on-demand whenever companies need it,” said Broadsword’s Director of Consulting, Julie Calfin.  “It’s exciting to help them take advantage of our video and webinar technology, online collaboration tools, and our proprietary CMMI Accelerator Tool Kit to get them started with CMMI success.  We expect great things from our CMMIxs clients!”

Engineering and software professionals interested learning more are invited to visit the website (www.cmmixs.com) or participate in the most recent webinar in Broadsword’s “Everything You Need to Know” series: “CMMI for Extra-Small Companies.”

BROADSWORD EXPANDS “AGILE TRANSFORMATION” SERVICE

Waterfall Organizations with CMMI ML2 or ML3 Ratings Gain the Advantages of Agile

WATERFORD, MI, March 30, 2015 – Today Broadsword Solutions Corporation (Broadsword), a performance innovation company, announced that it has expanded capacity to make its solutions available to more companies, starting with an Agile Transformation offering for organizations using more traditional “Waterfall” methods for software development.  Now, organizations that have been appraised at CMMI Maturity Level 2 or 3 using the CMMI Institute’s Capability Maturity Model Integration can more easily “go Agile” while preserving their investment in CMMI and traditional methodologies.

CMMI is a world-class behavioral model for engineering performance improvement that was developed at Carnegie Mellon University.  Broadsword pioneered the AgileCMMI approach for improving software development and organizational processes, using agile methods to implement CMMI-based solutions.  With AgileCMMI, organizations can safely transition from Waterfall to Agile methods, without disrupting their business.

"Agile Transformation is about organizations adopting new values and behaviors that help teams become more agile,” said Broadsword’s president, Jeff Dalton.  “The really neat thing about CMMI is that, since both CMMI and Agile are frameworks for improving product quality and delivery, CMMI is very effective at guiding and improving a company’s transformation to Agile methods. This means you can get even more out of your investment in CMMI while using its guidance to ‘go Agile’.”

Broadsword is celebrating its 10-Year Anniversary by expanding its ability to drive high-performance engineering to more companies, using its AgileCMMI methodology in collaborative consulting, coaching and training solutions, including the Agile Resiliency Architecture (ARA), Multi-Model Improvement (MMI), and CMMIxs (“extra small”) for firms under 25 people, along with its newly expanded Agile Transformation offering.

“There are many reasons that a CMMI Level 2 or Level 3 company might want to adopt an Agile approach,” said Broadsword’s Director of Strategic Solutions, Tim Zeller.  “They may want to deliver solutions more rapidly, get products to market faster or retain employees who want to work for a great Agile organization. We’re excited to have expanded our capacity to help more companies reach their Agile Transformation goal.”

Help us celebrate our 10th Anniversary!

Time flies when you’re having fun! It seems like only yesterday when a customer gave us our name in 2005, saying we “cut through the noise and politics like a Broadsword.” From that point forward, engineering and software organizations continued to engage us because they knew we brought a practical, agile, and incremental way to improve performance without disrupting their business – and they told us so. For example:

“Our experience working with the Broadsword team was exemplary. They quickly understood our business and helped us to lay out a plan to achieve our CMMI Level 3 goal.” ~ President, PI Innovo

So we kept cutting through the noise and politics to help put more companies on the path to greatness. Now we look up to discover it’s our 10-year anniversary!

To mark the happy occasion, we’re throwing a year-long party.

That’s right, a whole year of hanging out and sharing the good times! We will introduce you to Tim, Ross, Julie, Laura and all the great people we know, and all the great things we’ve been doing together. We’ll laugh. We’ll talk. And we’ll show you how to learn to use the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI), a model that helps you build better software and run better projects. It’s going to be the jam of the decade!

So come along! We’re letting the good times roll by giving more companies more access to our proven AgileCMMI solutions, Broadsword’s original approach to helping organizations like yours get better at what they are ALREADY doing.

It all starts right here, with the people, products and services that Broadsword is proud to make available to you. We’re handing out plenty of door prizes in 2015, so plan on bringing home lots of valuable take-aways in the weeks and months ahead.

Why throw a bash that lasts all year? Well, you hardly need a reason to party when you see CMMI as we see it - as an ongoing celebration, a model for being joyful in the quest for becoming a great company.

So grab that special software lady or an engineering buddy or two, and join us for a glass of birthday cheer that lasts all year. It’s our CMMI birthday, and we’re bringing the party to you!

Here’s your first door prize. Find out your true baseline and get back some data about how your team aligns with CMMI by taking our complimentary Micro Assessment. Get started with CMMI success! Click here: www.broadswordsolutions.com/micro-assessment.
