Special Guest Jeff Dalton to Reveal "Agile Resiliency" Performance Improvement Strategy

BETHESDA, MD, November 28, 2012 -- Leading performance improvement expert Jeff Dalton will share valuable take-away strategies for achieving process improvement results at a Meetup hosted by AEGIS, Broadsword Solutions and "5 Minutes to Process Improvement Success," (5PI), a unique expert interview series designed to help organizations fast track their way to success with process improvement.

The Meetup takes place on December 12, 2012, from 4:30-7:30PM at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner, VA.  Jeff Dalton will present, "Agile Resiliency: How CMMI can make Agile thrive and survive."

"The intent of our Meetups is to deliver dense, easily digestible nuggets of process improvement insight to apply in a variety of situations," said Bill Fox, editor of the 5PI series and organizer of the Meetup.  "Jeff's brilliant agileCMMI method combines the concept of utilizing incremental and iterative design and deployment with the concept of presenting everything to developers in a language they understand.  We're looking forward to the actionable insights Jeff will share.  Jeff's approach also supports my own advocacy of looking beyond single-point solutions to bring a broader perspective upon which to create more robust solutions."

Jeff Dalton is President of Broadsword Solutions, a performance innovation company.  He is an author, speaker and performance improvement consultant whose talks on "Agile Resiliency" have been heard by audiences across North America and online.  He has written extensively on the subject, most recently in Cutter IT Journal's November 2012 issue.

"For more than a quarter of a century, software organizations have launched one attempt after another to establish a useful framework for effective continuous improvement," Jeff Dalton said.  "The success of both CMMI and Agile methods have had a positive effect on the software industry, but each has yet to be successful driving the industry-wide levels of adoption we need to claim victory.  So we asked: why not combine the best of each?"

Engineering and software professionals interested in attending the Meetup are invited to register for the event at: http://jeff_dalton_5pi.eventbrite.com

CMMI Institute opens collaborative office space in Pittsburgh

On Wednesday, October 24th, I spent the day with CMMI Institute CEO Kirk Botula and Partner Network Manager Lisa Masciantonio at the CMMI Institute's new offices near Market Square in downtown Pittsburgh.

The best phrase I can come up with to describe the new office is "creative workspace."  The area is perfectly suited for large-scale collaboration with it's open and airy spaces that are flooded with light through large windows that face the river.

The area is shared with Carnegie Innovations, which maintains office space in a separate section of the suite.  This will help ensure a strong link back to Carnegie Mellon University and fits well with the entrepreneurial vision that Kirk as shared with us.

There are numerous open "team room" areas with white boards that cover the walls or roll around for impromptu brainstorming sessions.  The larges of these areas is right outside Kirk's office.

Even though there was construction and cabling being installed around us, the workspace allowed us to immediately get to work, discussing current-state and brainstorming future possibilities.

Kirk told me he was envisioning a day, in the very near future, where groups of partners who are passionate about the future of CMMI would be collaborating with the Institute staff to take CMMI, and other models, to the next level.

There's a lot to do over the next few months, and it's fair to expect that there will be some bumps in the road.  But the CMMI Institute is on the right track with the new space.  Kirk has made it clear to the PAB and the entire partner group that listening to the community is very high on his priority list, and he's taken the a major step by selecting a space that so readily supports open collaboration.

We expect that the information flow will accelerate dramatically over the next couple of weeks, so stay tuned!

Jeff Dalton is the 2012-2013 Chairman of the Partner Advisory Board.

GUIDENT ACHIEVES CMMI MATURITY LEVEL 2 RATING

Herndon, VA - June 4, 2012 - Guident, a leading integrator of business intelligence and systems engineering services to the government and commercial marketplaces, today announced that their strategic partnership with Broadsword Solutions Corporation (Broadsword) has resulted in achieving a re-appraisal as Maturity Level 2 (ML2) with the Software Engineering Institute's (SEI) Capability Maturity Model Integration, or CMMI.

The CMMI is a world-class engineering process performance model developed by the SEI at Carnegie Mellon University and has been adopted by engineering organizations throughout the world.  At one time the CMMI was most prevalent in the Department of Defense, aerospace, and federal government sectors, but now is just as successful in manufacturing, automotive, high-tech, and health care.

"One of the many benefits of choosing Broadsword to help with our re-appraisal was their ability to provide an advanced level of expertise into the CMMI model," said Dan Ackerman, Executive Vice President, Guident.  "Broadsword acted like a true partner by working with our team to provide state-of-the-art, relevant, and insightful direction that resulted in a successful CMMI ML2 re-appraisal.  This Maturity Level 2 rating helps Guident better serve our government customers."

"For the benefit of their customers, Guident invests in the adoption of industry-proven models and certifications," said Broadsword's president, Jeff Dalton.  "Not only have they achieved their re-appraisal of CMMI ML2, but their executives continue to lead the company forward by embracing Agile methods that position them well for improved performance and future CMMI Maturity Levels.  This approach will allow Guident to deliver even more value to their customers."

CMMI to move to new Carnegie Mellon Business Unit

The SEI announced this morning that the CMMI constellations (as well as other "mature technologies"), no longer considered "research" projects, will be moved to a new business unit within Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).  The Department of Defense, long a sponsor of the SEI, was very involved (along with CMU) in this decision.

To put this all in perspective, remember that the SEI is an "FFRDC" (Federally Funded Research and Development Center).  That means their charter is to conducted Research and Development activities - something they do very well.  So, this move makes total sense in that context.

We interpret this as a good . . . no, a great thing.  The SEI operates under the constraints of its sponsor (the DOD).  A new business unit, unencumbered by this constraint, will take the CMMI in new,  more flexible directions, and to new markets.

Here is the text of the SEI's announcement:

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) and the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) have mutually decided to move the CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) and the PCMM (People Capability Maturity Model ) out of the SEI and into an independent business unit of CMU. We believe this new unit may also be a natural transition path for other SEI developed technologies, methods and practices as they mature.

The SEI is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) established in 1984 to provide technical leadership and innovation through research and development to advance the practice of software engineering and technology in support of DoD needs. DoD acknowledges the significant contributions that CMMI has made to Defense programs and the software engineering community, in general. Recognizing the maturity of CMMI and PCMM, SEI and DoD have agreed that the maturity of these technologies make this an appropriate time for the SEI, as a science and technology based FFRDC, to concentrate on newer research.

Carnegie Mellon University is excited about establishing this new business unit to serve the global software engineering community even better--to make adoption, evolution and maintenance of the models more flexible for government and commercial organizations, to be more creative with our partners and other organizations in creating business relationships, and to face the market more proactively.

Join us in wishing the greatest success to this new organization!

Why I'm coming to SEPG 2012 (again) this year - Reason #2

The #2 Reason to Attend SEPGNATo Build Stronger Relationships with Other Partners
CMMI Appraiser, CMMI Consultant, CMMI Appraisal, CMMI COnsulting, CMMI Training, SEPG
Howdy Partners!  We’ve come a long way together down the hot and dusty trail.  Now that the SEPG North America rodeo on March 12-March 15 in Albuquerque is almost here, we’re almost to the end of my Top Ten reasons to be there.  (Here’s a round-up of Reason #10Reason #9Reason #8Reason #7Reason #6Reason #5Reason #4, and Reason #3.)  But I still have news for you: whether you’re the quickest artifact herder, the coolest documentation roper, or the bravest process rider in the West … at SEPG NA, you’re wanted.
So let’s get on with my list of Top 10 Reasons to attend SEPG North America 2012.
Drum roll, please!  Reason #2 is …
To Build Stronger Relationships with Other Partners
As you know by now, I’m a big believer in relationships.  I’ve already posted about the SEGP NA as THE place to build relationships with our customers (Reason #4) and key SEI leaders (Reason #3).  I am even more passionate about building relationships with each other as Partners.
It’s pretty clear to anyone who has developed and nurtured these types of relationships just how far-reaching and powerful a true partnership can be.
At SEPG NA we form, develop and nurture the relationships that matter most in our industry.  You’ll interact with other Partners and Lead Appraisers who, like you, are trying to make their clients successful.  In this way, SEPG NA is more than a conference.  It’s a community of like-minded professionals.
I’d like to see more Partners harness the power of the Partner community.  It’s the one place where we can get to know each other, learn from each other and potentially even work together.  The cool thing is, the more we do business together, the stronger we become as a community.  And the reverse is also true: the stronger we are as a community, the more we do business together.  You might say that the path to strong business is strong community.
As my good friend and competitor Bill Smith knows, I like to call it “co-opetition.”
As a unified Partner group, we are building stronger relationships with the SEI and with our clients.  But it goes beyond that.  We are building a community that helps each other build business.   And we want that!
It’s not too late to register – and we’ll see you in Albuquerque!
Need more reasons to go?  Check back soon for Reason #1.
